The best English test is the one every university on your shortlist — and your visa route — accepts. Start there, then think about format and timing.
IELTS Academic
The most widely accepted test for the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Ireland. Speaking is a face-to-face interview, which many students find more natural. Some UK visa routes require IELTS for UKVI specifically.
PTE Academic
Fully computer-based and scored by computer, with results usually within a few days. Accepted widely in Australia, New Zealand and the UK, and by many universities elsewhere.
TOEFL iBT
Traditionally preferred by US universities. ETS updated the test in 2026 and introduced a 1–6 band scale alongside the 0–120 scale during the transition, so check how each university states its requirement.
Duolingo English Test
Online, shorter and lower-cost, taken from home. Many US universities accept it, but acceptance elsewhere — and for visas — is more limited. Check carefully before choosing it.
How to decide
- List the English requirements for each university you plan to apply to.
- Check whether your visa requires a specific test.
- Choose the test accepted by all of them, then pick based on format and dates.
- Book a date that leaves time for a retake before your earliest deadline.
