Requirements vary by country, university and course, but most applications draw on the same core documents. Getting them ready early is the simplest way to avoid missing deadlines.
The usual checklist
- Academic records: marksheets and certificates for Class 10, Class 12 and any degree, plus a consolidated transcript where available.
- Passport: valid well beyond your intended course dates.
- Test scores: English test results, and GRE, GMAT or SAT where required.
- Statement of purpose or personal statement: specific to each course.
- Letters of recommendation: usually from teachers or employers who know your work.
- CV or résumé: especially for postgraduate and MBA applications.
- Portfolio: for design, architecture and art programmes.
Writing a strong statement of purpose
Explain why this course, why this university and why now. Use specific examples from your studies, projects or work, and show how the programme connects to your goals. Avoid general praise of the university — admissions teams read thousands of those.
Common mistakes
- Name or date-of-birth mismatches between documents.
- Recommendation letters requested too late.
- One generic statement sent to every university.
- Scanned documents that are unreadable or incomplete.
Plan backwards from deadlines
Make a calendar with each university’s deadline and work backwards: tests, recommendations, statements, then final checks. Aim to submit before the deadline, not on it.
